Correctional Services officers crowned national handball champions

A total of 260 officials from various Departments of Correctional Services competed for the title.

POLOKWANE – The combined Department of Correctional Services male team for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Region beat the Free State team to become the national handball champions on March 16.

The championship was held at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Indoor Sport Centre in Seshego, where the Eastern Cape’s Department of Correctional Services female handball team were also crowned the winners after they defeated Gauteng to win the title in the final match of the tourney.

A total of 260 officials from various Departments of Correctional Services competed for the title. According to Sachiel Nemafhohoni, the communications manager for the national Department of Correctional Services, the event was aimed to promote wellness among the department officials to ensure a healthy workforce through an active lifestyle.

“We had 260 officials from all corners of the country compete in the event. The department does not only care about the well-being of inmates, but also about the well-being of its employees.”

Nemafhohoni added that as part of the department’s community outreach programme, the handball players visited the Phuti Molapo Journey of Hope Old Age at Seshego’s Zone 5 to hand over food parcels to elderly citizens in the area.”
