He was joined by family and friends at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Saturday, 13 March.
He explained that he opted to celebrate in this way because running completes him. “I have competed in the Comrades Marathon, 12 times over the past years. I enjoy running and making friends which end up feeling like family. I celebrated my birthday with friends and the best thing we do together is to run, running is our business. I wanted to celebrate it in a different way through our love for sport,” he said.
He added that he had not anticipated how big the event would be and he felt humbled by sponsors and the support that made the day a reality. It was a buzz of activity as the birthday run accommodated people of various fitness levels with 5 km, 10 km, 21 km and 43 km races. There was also a walk and run for those who were not feeling in top shape and aerobics for a full body work out to cool down.
Approximately 230 to 240 runners from as far as Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the North West came to celebrate with their friend. The event was sponsored by Orchid Medical Aesthetics, MMP Security, SC Mdhluli Attorneys, Lancet Laboratories and Chillers on Wheels, Mulalo Consulting, Kutnic Holdings, Dr TJ Tsiane Dentist and Kan Security among others.
Steve Moyo, a friend of Rocky described him as a humble man who is very supportive and makes running a breeze, with his work as a running coach.
“I would like to thank everybody who came to show support, I am truly speechless. It is beautiful to see how many people are here and may we keep it this way as a running community. To those supporting, sponsoring and making Rocky’s birthday run a success, I express my sincere gratitude and appreciation in planning the event with me. From the bottom of my heart, your love and support has humbled me, let’s keep on running to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he said. Rocky plans to have his birthday run annually.
