National trophy for local veteran racer

Local veteran racer, Wessel Smit beat 18 racers from across the country to win third spot in the Extreme Festival Regional Race event

The race was held at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria last Saturday.

Smit, who was driving a Volkswagen Polo, finished ninth overall and third in the superhatch class A challenge, winning a trophy for his first circuit race.

In the first eight-lap sprint race, the 55-year-old finished in sixth place overall and fourth in class A in a group of 18 racers.

The second race was 45 minutes of mini endurance that was open to cars in the GT series, 111 challenge and superhatch series with 36 racing for honours.

He said he was happy to win a trophy on the first competitive race after a long break due to Covid-19.

“It was amazing to be able to return to the track. We were starving to race but it was good to see everyone racing their hearts out. It was good to put on a balaclava mask, helmet and a racing suit. I was soaking wet and exhausted because I have not raced in a while, but because of the excitement, I persisted. I am extremely excited to have taken part in the event and I cannot wait for the next events.”

Wessel is an avid oval track racer and also chairman of the Unique Raceway that is opening at the Polokwane Showgrounds soon.

“We cannot wait to race in Polokwane. We would have loved to race locally but races are halted at the moment due to Covid-19 restrictions.”
