Taking in the beauty of nature

To keep fit during the Covid-19 pandemic, Sarel Nong and The Mountain Company collaborated for a 10km hike through the mountains of Haenertsburg on Saturday.

Suitable for avid hikers and beginners, the Hike Wise event encouraged those who hiked for the first time to take up hiking as a hobby.

According to Nong, the weather was favourable. He hopes that hiking will become a lifestyle for many. Adhering to Covid-19 regulations, the hike was led by the Mountain Company’s Tour Guide, Sandi Moore, whose highlight of the day was spending time in nature.

“Seeing hikers smiling and interacting with fauna and flora, learning about the area, ignites my passion further to take people out and give them a true experience,” she said.

Letimola Ramusi said he started hiking as a hobby to help him meditate and explore the wonders of nature in a more literal form.

“I was involved in a vehicle accident that has left me with very serious leg injuries, and hiking allows me to challenge myself and overcome those physical barriers. Having a hiking mentor like Nong, who conquered Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest, is an honour.

Although it is tough, and seldom very draining, I have to put in double the effort. I accepted the personal challenge of overcoming my injuries and will continue to hike with my fellow Hike Wise team members who were very understanding and very supportive,” he said.

Nong said they are looking to organise another hike in two weeks and more information will be available on Nong’s Facebook page.
