Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng is aiming to raise R1 million towards the Mayoral Bursary Fund, when the the annual Mayoral Charity Golf Cup will be played at the Polokwane Golf Club on 4 December.
The event will see seasoned golfers from the city and elsewhere battling it out on the golf course to raise funds for indigent students in the Polokwane Municipality.
Speaking at the launch of the event in the city last Thursday, Nkadimeng said the event has been a major success since its inception.
“The 2019 edition was a huge success as we were able to reach our target raising R1 million. We had a field of 124 golfers from all the corners of the province as well as from other provinces. We would appreciate that despite the current situation, these numbers will be maintained or even surpassed.”
She stated that over the past years, the Mayoral Bursary Fund has managed to benefit more than 200 learners to gain access to tertiary education.
“Last year we had 41 students who were at tertiary institutions all over the country and through the contributions collected from the 2019 edition, we managed to absorb another 40 students for the current year of study. This means we currently have 81 students being funded from the Mayoral Bursary Fund,” remarked Nkadimeng.
“Our target for the 2020 event remains at R1 million. We remain resolute and thankful for the businesses community and individuals who will support this charitable cause. We believe that through partnerships, this target is achievable. It will be a plus for the young people of this municipality if we go beyond the set target. Despite the odds, it is our goal that at least 40 more students are given an opportunity to attain higher education during the 2021 year of study. This will give hope where hope is lost. It is through this event that we can bring together businesspeople from Polokwane to network and ensure that while playing in a relaxed environment, the turf becomes a drawing board for innovative business ideas in the way we rise above the challenges we face.”
