As a way of encouraging Limpopo residents to adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, provincial government officials took part in various sporting codes to observe the national recreation day at the Polokwane Cricket fields on Friday.
It was learnt that the event is celebrated on the first Friday of October nationally and it aims to encourage South Africans to participate in recreational activities. Participants took part in activities that included fun walk, aerobics, soccer, netball and volleyball. It was further reported that this was the first time the provincial event did not feature indigenous games such as diketo, morabaraba and kgati among others.
Office of the Premier employee responsible for Transversal Employee Health and Wellness Programmes, Tlakale Nkadimeng indicated that officials from all government departments put on their sport gear for this eventful day. She highlighted that the programme was coordinated by her division. She added that the gathering also featured financial experts who educated officials on wise ways to save money and health professionals, who performed health screenings.
“We were assisted by the private sector to make the gathering a success. Companies sponsored goods such as trophies and medals, food, fruits and water. Everything went as planned and we are happy with the turnout. This was a fun way for public servants to remind residents to exercise to be fit and live a healthy life. We would to thank all our sponsors and officials for supporting the initiative,” Nkadimeng explained.
