Well over 1 000 athletes braved the dark and cold winter’s morning when they lined up for the start of the second annual Women’s Day Race hosted by Muteo Consulting and Mzansi Athletics Club on Saturday.
“The attendance was great and beyond our expectations as athletes gathered to honour women in South Africa. We owe the continuous growth and success of the event to all social runners as well as clubs from across the province,” Mzansi chairperson Richard Rambiyana said.
He added that planning for next year’s race had been tabled already and that runners should keep their diaries open for 9 August 2020. He invited corporates, government and individuals to take hands to ensure the success of next year’s race.
In the 10 km for men Disego Ledwaba claimed first position with a time of 33 minutes followed by Zeiner Tsiba in second place. Murabeli Netshiavha was the first woman home in the 10 km in a time of 49:55.
Japhet Mudau attained at winning time of 1:11.13 in the men’s category of the 21,1 km while the Glenda Ramashia’s time of 1:32.24 gave her the honour in the women’s class.
