The province can be rightfully proud of a son of the soil, Hlompo Kekana who was presented with the Midfielder of the Season award during the annual Premier Soccer League (PSL) Awards held in Durban on Sunday evening.
Kekana, who captains Mamelodi Sundowns, hails from Zebediela. He played a crucial role in his team’s 2018/19 PSL victory to which he contributed our goals while not missing a single one of the 29 matches.
He beat Orlando Pirates midfielder, Thembikosi Lorch and fellow teammate Themba Zwane to walk away with the trophy and R50 000 cash prize. He was also named PSL Player of the Month for April and May.
Another notable winner on the night was Baroka Football Club goalkeeper, Elvis Chipezeze who was named Telkom Knockout Player of the Tournament. The Zimbabwean goal minder kept three clean sheets and conceded only two goals in the tournament. He took home a floating trophy and R200 000 cash prize.
Baroka spokesperson Mogau Leshilo said Chipizeze’s achievements puts the club amongst some of the best in the country. “His award shows that we are the best club in the country and we have the best players. He did well in the tournament and we wish him all the best in the upcoming season” Leshilo said.
