Cycling enthusiasts can look forward to some adrenaline filled action this weekend as the second annual Tour de Limpopo is set to conclude at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Starting in Bela-Bela yesterday (Wednesday), the Tour de Limpopo is a four-day stage race which heads to Polokwane where they stay for the night, before heading to Tzaneen where they stay for two nights and then return to Polokwane on Saturday to finish the tour at the stadium.
It is the second consecutive international road cycling stage race to be hosted in Limpopo and will see teams from Rwanda, Italy, France, Botswana, Namibia and Great Britain competing against local riders.
Every evening, riders and support teams will have a joint event dinner for the day’s prize giving with cultural activities and other entertainment synonymous with the province’s cultural flair.
Each evening will have a theme embracing the rich cultural diversity of Limpopo.
Cyclists will once again compete for the yellow jersey, King of the Mountain, best sprinter, best young rider, most aggressive rider and best team.
Last year Tour De Limpopo saw a collaboration between Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and Cycling South Africa (CSA), showcasing the diversity of Limpopo as a premier cycling destination. A recent press release quoted LTA Chief Executive Officer Nomasanto Ndlovu to have said: “Adventure tourism is another fast-growing segment in Limpopo and it attracts a high volume of cyclists who visit for mountain biking, as well as 4×4 off-road enthusiasts from all over South Africa and beyond. This finds resonance with LTA’s marketing strategy, particularly on the sports tourism front, mainly due to the province’s scenic beauty provided by the topography. This event will help grow the province’s sports tourism profile.”
