Polokwane was well represented at the annual Two Oceans Marathon with several local athletes showing off their strength and determination in Cape Town on the weekend.
Among them was Polokwane Athletic Club member Rocky Mojela who is by now a familiar face at local and national races and regularly appointed as bus driver for a group of athletes who wish to qualify for the annual Comrades Marathon.
This year was no exception with Mojela in the driver’s seat of a group of athletes aiming to cross the finish line in 06:25 or less. “I delivered all passengers participating in the 56 km marathon within 06:23. This means maintaining a pace of 6 minutes 40 seconds per kilometre,” Mojela indicated.
Mojela recently lead a group of athletes during the recent Mall of the North Marathon.
The 41-year-old athlete has been running professionally since 2005 is aiming for his 11th Comrades Marathon this year. “The duty of a bus driver is to lead, guide, advise and motivate a group of athletes aiming to qualify for the Comrades Marathon,” Mojela recently explained.
The bus at any marathon is easily noticeable as it is characterised by singing, whistling and one or more tambourines keeping the beat.
Pietersburg Road Runners, Mzansi Athletics Club and other local clubs indicated that they had athletes competing at Two Oceans this year but could not provide further details at the time of going to print.
