More than 100 aspiring young cricketers from primary schools in the province revealed their hidden cricket talent during the KFC mini cricket festival held at the Polokwane cricket grounds last Wednesday.
Assisted by players from the provincial cricket team, learners were given a platform to test their batting, bowling and fielding skills.
The learners were also given an opportunity to play a thrilling short over format match against in order to test their strength against their opponents.
One of the participants, Lesego Mogano from Mogano Primary School in the Ga-Molepo area said she had learned a lot from the clinics and would consider playing cricket in future. “I did not know anything about cricket. It was the first time ever that I touched a cricket ball and a bat. It was a good platform to meet learners from various schools in the province who are passionate about the sporting code. I must also confess that enjoyed everything about the game. It is a unique sporting code compared to our usual netball and soccer,” Lesego commented.
Takalani Semeli, an official from KFC said the day was primarily aimed at developing potential and future cricketers. “We are happy with what we saw in Polokwane. The learners are talented and they are eager to play. I believe we will produce cricket players that will play for Proteas in future from this province,” Semeli said.
