Caster Semenya wins big at SA Sport Awards

Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Thandi Moraka has congratulated Caster Semenya for winning Sports Star of the Year and Sportswoman of the Year, as well as People’s Choice Sports Star of the Year awards at the at the South African Sport Awards held at Mangaung in the Free State on Sunday evening.

The world 800 m champion was rewarded for a superb season on the track which included multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games, Congress of the African Athletics Confederation African Senior Championships, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League and IAAF Continental Cup events. In her wake she also shattered national records over the 400, 800, 1 000 and 1 500 m distances.
Moraka thanked Semenya for putting not only Limpopo but South Africa on the international map. “Walking away with three awards is no mean feat. As the province we are elated that one of our own continues to be a shining light in the sport arena. Her recent prowess gives hope to the people of the province and the continent and confirms that your best play doesn’t determine your destiny.
As the province we call upon all the people, including business to support athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds. Keep up the good work.”
President of Athletics South Africa, Aleck Sikhosana was quoted to have said Semenya deserves all the accolades. “These are well-deserved and just rewards for Caster, for her hard work and determination. “We trust this will inspire other athletes, especially female athletes whom she represents as a role model.”
