The captain of Polokwane City Football Club, Jabu Maluleke believes their elimination from the Telkom Knockout Cup will enable them to focus on the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
City were eliminated out of the tournament by Super Sport United who beat them 6-5 in penalty kicks in the last 16 match of the competition at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
He said they would have loved to advance to the quarterfinals of the cup but it was not to be. “We gave our all in the match. They scored and we equalised so it was good game, we were just unfortunate that we had lost in penalties.”
City is sitting comfortably in sixth position with 14 points and Maluleke said they needed to be consistent in order to cement their position and stay afloat in the league. “We started the season well and we need to continue winning matches. We are playing Maritzburg United on Saturday. It is not going to be an easy match but we have to win in order to move up in the league,” he said.
Defender Edgar Manaka echoed his captain’s sentiments: “Last season we reached the semi-finals of the tournament and we thought we would emulate our success but it was not to be. Super Sport United is an experienced team and they have played in numerous cup competitions and won a lot of cups as well.
“We are happy that we were able to push them until the end and we were just unfortunate. We are focusing on the league now, we are in a good position and I think we will do well in the remaining matches of the league.”
