Local boxer, Rofhiwa Maemu retained his World Boxing Association (WBA) Pan African Featherweight title after defeating Tello Lithebe on majority decision at the Fox Sports Africa Boxing tournament held at Sun Meropa last Friday evening.
Maemu came into the fight buoyed by his impressive record of 16 victories and two draws from 25 fights.
The Venda born boxer controlled the opening rounds with his high energy, aggressive work-rate and the attacking of his opponent’s body which saw him up on the scorecard early on.
Lithebe, who has won 20 fights from 29, showed maturity and experience during the fight unleashing strong punches but could not knock Maemu out.
The feat takes Maemu’s fight record to 17 victories, seven losses and two draws while Lithebe’s record stands at 20 victories and ten losses.
The WBA Pan African Super Middleweight Title fight between Patrick Mukala from Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Emmanuel Anim ended in a majority draw after 12 rounds.
Both fighters gave a good account of them but could not eliminate each other.
Congratulating the boxers Kyle De Klerk, Commercial Director of Africa Boxing Fox Sports, who organised the event, said they are very proud of their passion and commitment to the sporting code.
“These are the kind of bouts that will grow their career and we are extremely happy that we managed to stage top quality bouts that went a distance.”
General Manager for Sun Meropa, Peter Guthrie thanked all of the organisers, boxers and supporters far making the event a success.
“Each fight held was filled with excitement as the supporters chanted the boxers’ names during each of the bouts. To all of the winners, you have showed true talents, congratulations to each of you.”
