Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Thandi Moraka has applauded the Department of Sport and Recreation for deciding on Limpopo as host of the National Indigenous Games which commenced at Seshego Stadium on Tuesday.
The games will see teams representing the nine provinces battling for top honours in indigenous games codes such as dibeke, intonga Jukskei, kgati, kho-kho and morabaraba until Friday (tomorrow).
Moraka, delivering the opening address on Sunday, said the decision by the national department was well-considered given the diverse cultural experiences in which the various categories of games are played in the local communities. “These games have evolved from our rich way of life and it is exciting that they have acquired a competitive status.”
She also added the games will benefit local economy and contribute to advancement of national building and social cohesion. “Our people will have an opportunity to network, nurture social bonds and enjoy inter-cultural learning. The event will attract tourists from the length and breadth of the country who will make use of the some of the tourism products.”
Tokozile Xasa, Minister of Sport and Recreation said they decided to bring the tournament to Limpopo for its predominantly cultural rich manifested environment with respect for its cultural diversity. “We are happy to be here in Limpopo. The province hosted the event last year and it was a success. Participants can expect nothing but the best in entertainment from the games on the field to fashion shows on the ramps showcasing Africa couture from African food stalls to cultural exhibitions with tours that educate us on our culture practices and African journey.”
Moraka and Xasa are expected to give medals and trophies to the winning teams at the closing ceremony of the games scheduled for Seshego Stadium tomorrow (Friday).
