Subsequent to a disappointing 2017/18 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season Baroka Football Club has released half of its squad in order to accommodate new recruits.
Former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Lewis Macha, Khutso Mohwatseleng, Mzwanele Mahashe, Rethabile Soso, Virgil Vries and former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Punch Masenamela were released on Monday.
They will be replaced by Elvis Chipezeze, Tshediso Patjie, Bheki Maliba, Thabo Moseki, Bonginkosi Makume, Siseko Manana, Armand Gnanuillet, Ananias Gebhardt, Shabani Hussein, Shabani Hussein and Orebotse Mongae who were signed by the Club last week.
Chief Executive Officer, Morgan Mammilla said the overhaul at the club was the result of the unsatisfactory PSL season they had. They finished the season in 14th position with a meager 34 points after 30 matches. They started well but spent most of the time in the relegation zone. “We did not do well last season but we need to acknowledge the fact that football is about knowledge. We are still new in the PSL, still learning and you cannot expect us to be on par with teams like Mamelodi Sundowns. Of course, we need to improve and we will. That is why we went to the market and bought new players because we want to compete in the league and strengthen our position.”
He added that the club has already started with preparations for the 2018/19 PSL season which commences in August. “The players and the technical team reported for a pre-season camp last Tuesday and we are looking forward to the new season. We have a new coach in Wedson Nyirenda whom we believe will do well,” Mammilla concluded.
