Sixty swimmers from the province were selected to a provisional team that will have the opportunity to contest for inclusion in the Limpopo Schools Aquatics team that will represent the province at the national schools swimming championships later this year.
The provisional squad was selected during the Limpopo Schools Aquatics Championship held at the municipal pool in Burger Street on Saturday.
Swimmers from Hoërskool Ben Vorster, Laerskool Tzaneen, Laerskool Kruger Park, Stanford Lake College, Hoërskool Merensky, Laerskool Bosveld, Unicorn Preparatory School, Laerskool Phalaborwa, Hoërskool Piet Potgieter, Hoërskool Frikkie Meyer, Pepps Preparatory School, Laerskool Marble Hall, Laerskool Julian Muller, Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos, Hoërskool Noorderland and Hoërskool Ben Viljoen participated.
Rob Anderson, competition manager and Vice President of Limpopo Aquatics said the squad would be selected on the same venue. “We have many swimmers in the squad and we will be narrowing it down to a manageable number. It is going to be a stiff competition and we have very good swimmers this year. We are looking forward to the final selection event,” Anderson said. He could at the time of going to print not supply the complete list of swimmers included in the provisional squad nor the event results.
Stella Mathebula, Deputy Director of School Sport at the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture said they were satisfied with the selected squad and looked forward to the final event.
“We are confident that the selectors will select a strong squad that will represent us well at the national event. We want more medals at the national event. Last year we won eight gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze medals and want to surpass that figure this year.”
