Polokwane Municipality’s Mayoral Charity Golf Day that was hosted at the local golf club last Friday was a huge success and raised over R2 million for two projects that are annually supported by the municipality.
Polokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng and MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Onicca Moloi set the pace when they teed off shortly after 07:00 and were followed by 148 other players. The format of the competition was Individual Stableford.
Speaking to the media after delivering a perfect shot down the fairway, Nkadimeng said that the proceeds from the Mayoral Charity Golf Day will continue to support students who are capable of progressing academically but lack financial resources. “We decided in 2016/17 that instead of sponsoring only a part of their tuition, the municipality will henceforth provide full assistance covering tuition and accommodation for the duration of their studies,” Nkadimeng said and added that another 50 new bursaries will be made available next year. “I am delighted to announce that our current bursary holders obtained a 98% pass rate over the last year and it is therefore appropriate that they should enjoy our continued support,” Nkadimeng said.
According to Nkadimeng, more than 30 non-governmental organisations around the municipality were assisted with annual direct contributions of over R30 000 each last year and will be assisted again. “While this may be a drop in the ocean, it is significant in a sense that we have consistently aimed to better the offering each year, Nkadimeng said.
Referring to her spectacular shot, Nkadimeng said that she is improving every year and that it is in line with the history of the golf day. Last year we raised R1,8 million, this year it is R2 million and with the help of our sponsors and the support of our residents, 2018 will be an even better year,” Nkadimeng said.
The winner in the Ladies Division was Nola Peceur with 38 points, followed by Shertina Maramane, Cecilia Masudie and Nicolette Howard with 35, 34 count in and 34 points count out respectively.
Nico Myburgh, David Hlabyago and Mahlatse Langa were the winners in the A, B and C Mens Divisions respectively.
The male player with the longest drive on the seventh was German Makoe and the longest drive for ladies on the second belonged to Nicolette Howard.
