The first annual Run 4 Cancer Ultra Marathon held in Polokwane went off very well and will definitely be back again next year.
This is according to Tom Sedibe, Chairperson of SA Run 4 Cancer, who said although there were a few minor hiccups, everything went very well. “Overall it was a great success. By next year we will have ironed out the few challenges we had,” Sedibe said.
He further thanked everyone involved for their participation and urged them to take part again next year.
Sedibe explained that the Run 4 Cancer Ultra Marathon is a health and fitness awareness and support programme that aims to support different cancer awareness programmes and support different victims: affected, infected and survivors.
The race was held in aid of the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology (TLC) Ward.
Race organiser, Roelf Coetzee, said the event was a joint venture between Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) and Run/Walk for Life Polokwane.
The race also served as a Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans qualifier. Fanyane Sonyane from Apex Athletics Club in Pretoria was the last person to finish in time to qualify for these two marathons. “I ran hard and I am very grateful that I made it within the qualifying time,” an exhausted Sonyane said minutes after completing the race.

In the 48 km for men Kebede Dinke from Nedbank Running Club (Nedbank) won the open category.
