The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in collaboration with Nzhelele Women Boxing Promoters will stage a boxing tournament at Makhado Multipurpose Centre on Saturday when 14 female and male boxers from the province are expected to contest for various titles in five weight categories.
Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Onicca Moloi said by hosting the tournament they are fulfilling the commitment made during her department’s budget speech earlier this year.
“We said in our budget speech that we want to reintroduce professional boxing in our province. We are the home of boxing. This province boasts renowned boxers such as Cassius Baloyi and Phillip Ndou who made a name for themselves in the boxing world. We want to produce more boxers like them. So with tournaments like these we are reviving a sporting code that has been slowly dying, and I believe we are on course,” Moloi said.
The line-up is as follows:
Flyweight: Zolile Miya v. Nyelisani Thagamega;
Thizwilondi Nempandoni v. Balanganani Ndou
Featherweight: Mashudu Ramakuela v. Mudau Gudani
Junior welterweight: Humbulani Netshamutshedzi v. Onke Duku
Featherweight: Deon Mbubana v. Rendani Ramudzuli
Junior featherweight: Phumudzo Munyai v. Thendo Mulimo
Female junior flyweight: Matodzi Thompho v. Nomthuthuzeli Chitani
