This year marks the second annual Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race to be hosted in conjunction with Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC) at Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos on 9 September and amateur and professional athletes are invited to participate.
The race is held in honour of the late Hanlie Steyn, wife of Stefan Steyn, a local blind and multiple Comrades Marathon participant.
The race will comprise 5 km, 10 km and 21,1 km options. Entry fees are R30, R50 and R80 respectively and temporary licences are available at R30.
The 10 km and 21,1 km entrants will be set off at 07:00 and the starter’s gun will go off at 07:15 for the 5 km race. Athletes are advised to use the entrance to Oosskool’s rugby fields in Kleinenberg Street.
Entries can be done on the day before the race at the school’s rugby field from 16:30 to 19:00 as well as on the day of the race from 05:30 to 06:45.
PAC Chairperson Corrie Calitz indicated that the club is proud to be hosting the second annual race and urged athletes to enter in their masses to ensure the event’s success.
Hanlie passed away in 2015 and the first successful memorial race was held last year. Hanlie always supported her husband at every race, despite her fighting her own battle with cancer.
Calitz informed that the race will be presented under the rules of Athletics South Africa and International Association of Athletics Federations. Any athletes caught running with earphones will be disqualified. Licences and the race number must be visible. Cut-off time for the 21,1 km is 3 hours and winners must attend the prize giving ceremony in order to receive prize money. For more information contact Calitz on 082 464 1963.
