Baroka Football Club beat Santos 3-1 to consolidate their position at the National First Division (NFD) during their 23rdmatch of the division at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Baroka still leads the pack on 49 points and the victory gives them a four point lead against Highlands Park who are currently on the second position with 45 points after 23 matches.
Former Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder, Jacky Motshekgwa, Nkosinathi Ndlovu and Loyiso Simandla scored the winning goals while Suhayl Allie scored the only goal for Santos.
Baroka Head Coach, Kgokolo Thobejane described the match against Santos as one of the toughest of the season.
“They have big, tough players and they made things difficult for us. We beat them 3-2 in Cape Town last year although it was not easy match. They came here and they made us fight. We fought hard and we scored goals,’’ Thobejane said.
Their next match will be against Premier Soccer League outfit Golden Arrows in last 16 matches of the Nedbank Cup at Chatsworth stadium on 2 April.
Baroka beat Chippa United 3-2 fortnight ago to the reach the 16 round of the tournament.
“We played them last season while they were still the NFD they did not give us problems. We are not scared of them. We are doing well in our division and we want to continue with the same form until the end of the season. What I can tell you is that we are going to win the match and proceed to the quarterfinals of the tournament,” Thobejane said.
