The annual Munnik Meerkat Mountain Bike Challenge was well attended on Saturday despite some heavy rains that caused the route to be more challenging than usual.
Some spectators were eager to see the talented learner from Louis Trichardt, Komborero Bere entering the finishing shoot in first place but muscle cramps caused him to fall behind so much that he managed to complete the race in 16th place overall.
It was Hein Engelbrecht (2:50.26) who claimed victory in the men’s 70 km followed by Henry Hayes and Jan-Louis Pretorius in second and third respectively. Dando Britt (3:34.53), Dorothy Rood and Louwrina Dando took the first three positions on the podium in the 70 km female category.
JP Venter ruled the 35 km men’s category with a time of 1:21.41. Sheldon Muller finished second just over minutes behind Venter followed by Turner de Swardt in third. In the female category Ashley Lynne Murray top scored with a time of 1:26.55, just over seven minutes before runner-up Soretha Lubbe. Melanie Melville finished third.
In the 10 km race which lured just over 100 riders was the perfect challenge for the not so serious riders as well as those aiming to become professional mountain bikers. The male category was won by Janco Coetzee with a time of 31:07 followed by Anthony Clayton second and Bevan Muller third. Annika Kotze completed the 10 km for women in just less than 40 minutes followed by Simoné Oberholzer and Amelie Owens in third respectively.
