Newly appointed Coach of Polokwane City Football Club, Julio Leal was a happy man on Saturday after his charges beat Platinum Stars 1-0 at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium. The victory moved City up two positions on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) ladder from tenth to 12th.
City’s goal was scored by Siphisihle Nzimande in the first half of the match after he received a pass from his captain Jabulani Maluleke. The victory was the first for Leal who joined the club a fortnight ago following the departure of Kosta Papic to Black Leopards Football Club.
Leal, who was not on the bench as a result of his work permit which is still to be finalised, said he was happy with the victory and impressed with the way the team played on Saturday.
Spokesperson for the Club, Tumelo Makgoara said the technical team will use the African u.23 Championships break to sharpen the team ahead of the match against Golden Arrows on 19 December at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.
The break was called by PSL in September in support of the South African u.23 team, which will participate in the 8 Nations tournament set to take place in Senegal from 28 November to 12 December.
The Senegal tourney serves as qualifying tournament for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and would have clashed with league fixtures and the Telkom Knockout.
“The break will give the technical team ample time to work with the players and also offer time for injured players to heal,” Makgoara said.
He said the aim is to win against Arrows and go into the Christmas break in the top 8 bracket. “That is our ultimate goal. We want to continue winning and I don’t see anything stopping us against Arrows,” Makgoara said.
