[COLUMN] Merry go round of coaches in Limpopo

BK's Sport View

It is common cause that coaches the world over are generally hired to deliver results when such are not forthcoming, they are shown the door or redeployed elsewhere within the structures of the club. In South Africa especially with professional football, there is a wretched pattern that has emerged and is being encompassed as typical – perhaps it is but I certainly don’t think so.

I will try and keep my focus on Limpopo professional teams to drive my point home and certify my argument.

Dylan Kerr was roped in at Black Leopards in November of 2018 and June 2019 he was given his marching order. Managed 21 games – won 6, drew 6 and lost 9 and posted a 28,57% win rate.

Then in December of 2019 the flamboyant Khurishi Mphahlele brought him and lasted until November 2020 having managed 22 games winning 9, drawing 4 and losing 9 with a win rate of 40,91%. He was dismissed under circumstances that have now gone legal.

The same month he got fired he resurfaced at Leopards again and in less than 3 months had been given the boot after losing 4 of the 9 games had been in charge and collecting 9 points out of a possible 27.

Leopards’ supremo David Thidiela would none of it and effected load shedding on Kerr’s bank account.

But Kerr’s football gods kept smiling on him and landed a job at an out of sorts Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila now under new ownership far from the circus that has been at play there.

The man Kerr took over from is former goalkeeper turned coach Joel Masutha who has had 9 on and off stints with Black Leopards spanning a period of 10 years where he assumed roles ranging from caretaker, assistant coach and fully fledged coach and has seen criss cross the country with “piece jobs” at Maccabi, Real Kings and Chippa United before landing at TTM where he was subsequently released just 6 days before Valentine’s Day.

One would have thought Polokwane City learnt their lessons in the premiership and would get their house in order but alas as they say a leopard never loses its spot.

One moment they have Johnny Ferreira as their coach after he had emerged from stints at FC Cape Town, Uthongathi and Sekhukhune United replacing a wet behind the ears McDonald Makhubedu who moved to Sekhukhune United leaving in a brusque manner. Already the Bakenberg born and loyal servant Bernard Molekwa had left City in cryptic circumstances something that left me agog with disbelief but such is the modus operandi of club bosses whose awareness on football matters is inadequate.
