[Opinion Piece] Premier, MEC deserve appreciation for efforts to fight Covid-19

In our diverse universe, there are some human beings whose deeds are worthy of public admiration and great salutation. There are persons whose inspirational actions and precious contributions are decorated with sheer ingenuity and meticulous diligence. The true value of brilliance and ingenuity is mostly observed in times of tumultuous shockwaves and tidal thunderstorms.

I greatly admire the Limpopo Government’s clinical strategies in combatting and preventing the vicious spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the province. To date, premier Chupu Mathabatha has remarkably managed to salvage Limpopo from the monstrous clutches of the deadly Covid-19. The medical acumen and scientific sophistry displayed by MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba has enabled our province to swiftly contain the pandemic. The premier and MEC are managing, pre-empting and combatting the ‘Covid-19 conundrum’ very diligently and impressively. Since the first case of the virus was reported in the country on 5 March, Limpopo’s infection rate has been consistently low when compared to most provinces. On 7 May, the number of reported infections in Limpopo stood at 41, while there were 3 994 reported cases in the Western Cape, 1 804 in Gauteng, 1 204 cases in Kwa-Zulu Natal and 929 infections in the Eastern Cape.

Mathabatha’s ‘contain-and-combat’ strategic technique has been highly instrumental in putting Limpopo on a much safer trajectory. In a period of two weeks, Limpopo Government had managed to screen 2,7 million people for possible symptoms of Covid-19. That monumental figure represents almost half of the total number (5,8 million) of citizens screened in the country. Mathabatha is not perfect, but his visionary prowess is phenomenal.

We must also salute and appreciate all our medical doctors, nurses, police, soldiers, traffic officers and community healthcare workers. These highly resilient compatriots are doing their greatest best to save and protect our nation. It is also critically important to thank all citizens who faithfully respect and obey the lockdown regulations. Despite their temporary inconvenience, lockdown restrictions are made to protect the lives of millions of citizens. As citizens, let us find it in our good hearts to adhere to the lockdown prescriptions. The Limpopo’s Provincial Command Council, as led by Mathabatha, is evidently doing its utmost best to combat and eliminate the virulent pandemic.
