Letter to premier Chupu Mathabatha

Kindly note that the penultimate purpose of this letter is not to critique your achievements, strides and shortfalls. Actually, my foremost intention is to relay some critical observations to your urgent attention as premier.

Dear Premier

I trust that your festive holiday was characterised by harmony, joyful elation and introspective relaxation.

Kindly note that the penultimate purpose of this letter is not to critique your achievements, strides and shortfalls. Actually, my foremost intention is to relay some critical observations to your urgent attention as premier.

On 12 July 2008, the iconic Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, delivered the sixth Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture in Johannesburg. In that epic lecture titled “Behold The New Africa”, president Sirleaf intelligently intimates: “How do I wish to be remembered when I finally step down as president of Liberia?”

What a philosophic abstraction of thoughtful introspection!

Premier, since 2014 you have done your utmost best in rescuing Limpopo from a thundering economic precipice. But I’m currently concerned with the qualitative character of the legacy you seek to create as Limpopo premier. As premier, how do you wish to be remembered when your term of office ends in 2024? A great legacy is always sustained by a complimentary nexus between past and present achievements. Previous achievements and successes are always immortalised by contemporary strides and milestones.

Undeniably, you have truly rescued Limpopo from the edge of terminal bankruptcy, you have also brought fiscal stability and prudence to the province’s fiscus. But currently, how do you plan to reduce the levels of unemployment and poverty in Limpopo? Through radical industrial expansion, you can eliminate joblessness in Limpopo.

I have clinically observed that your legacy, as premier, would be defined by the success of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs). If the SEZ ideal fails, then your legacy would be locked in the dungeons of shame and condemnation. SEZs are the most powerful catalysts for societal prosperity, job creation and massive capital investments. Limpopo’s agricultural and mineral outputs have a huge potential to can expand our economic trajectory. As premier, you must compel all mining companies to build processing and manufacturing plants within Limpopo. By 2024, Limpopo must become a top-class industrial and manufacturing powerhouse. The pursuit of radical industrial expansion will immortalise your legacy as premier.
