Please don’t forget your keys

I regularly visit room one to check on the ambient temperature. That is done by opening the locked door with the right key, stepping across to the temperature gauge, then adjusting window blinds to control the temperature if required.
Often I walk to the building, then discover I have forgotten the keys, then there is no choice but to trudge back to get them. That’s what I did today, only to discover that the door was not locked!
Are there keys needed to enjoy a fulfilling life stretching to eternity? We remember the birth of Jesus at Christmas-time. Jesus said: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full”. (John 10:10) He also said: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock.
“If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me”. (Rev. 3:20)
Listening for the voice of the one who knocks is the key we need. To do so, we must find times of silence in the middle of busy lives to concentrate on listening.
Jesus is the one who initiates the approach and He may use any number of ways to make contact.
That knock may come from our circumstances, what others say or from Bible reading. Once we realise that God’s Son is real and cares deeply for us we may respond by opening the door and inviting Him to come in, to eat with us and do a spring-clean of our house. He will show us what needs to change.
Then will come fellowship with the Father and with other children of God. That’s when we begin to experience life to the full and to have certainty about our eternal destination with Him. Fortunately our loving God does not demand conditions before we come to Him. He sent his Son to save the world and will meet us when we look for Him, even if we are carrying a heavy load of guilt and can bring no merit to the door. The door is not locked.
