Be careful of the food you share with pooch

POLOKWANE – Many dog lovers enjoy sharing their meals with their pets, but a lot of human food is bad for dogs.

Review spoke to a local veterinarian in this regard:

• Avocados are toxic to dogs.

• Chocolate contains theobromine, a cardiac stimulant which can be fatal to dogs.

• Fruit pips and seeds: most of these contain cyanide.

• Garlic contains only a small amount of thiosulphate (poisonous if large amounts are ingested), though a small amount, so a lot would have to be ingested to be toxic. Keep in mind that it builds up in the system.

• Grapes affect dogs’ kidneys.

• Macadamia nuts affect the nervous system.

• Mushrooms affect the nervous system, kidneys and heart.

• Nutmeg can cause seizures and central nervous system damages.

• Onions contain the same toxin as garlic, though in much larger amounts.

• Raisins have the same effect as grapes.

• Sugar-free foods that contain Xylitol can cause liver failure in dogs.

• Tomatoes, potatoes and rhubarb: some parts of these contain oxalates, which can be toxic to dogs.

“I would recommend that people stick to dog food and treats specifically made for dogs,” the veterinarian concluded.
