PEMPS’ Bokang steals the show at city’s chess championship

Bokang Nchabeleng has been dubbed a new junior chess prodigy after she secured first place at the Polokwane Chess Championship 2024, hosted by PEPPS.

POLOKWANE – Pietersburg English Medium Primary School’s Bokang Nchabeleng, stole the show at the Polokwane Chess Championship 2024, hosted by PEPPS on Saturday.

The tournament was a resounding success, uncovering a new chess prodigy in the junior section.

This year’s championship saw over 90 players fiercely competing for the top spot.

Bokang demonstrated exceptional skills and strategic brilliance throughout the tournament, ultimately securing first place in her section.

Her victory earned her a cash prize, two gold medals, and two prestigious trophies. Bokang was recognised not only as the champion of the junior section but also as the best female player.

Simon Kekana, the general secretary of Limpopo Chess, highlighted the significance of nurturing young talent in chess.

“It is our responsibility as the federation to ensure that we find talented young children and expose them to chess at a high level,” he said, emphasising the federation’s commitment to supporting and promoting young chess players like Bokang.

In addition to her victory, Bokang received a direct invitation to the Limpopo Closed Championship, scheduled for later this year.

This invitation marks a significant step in her chess career, providing her with an opportunity to compete against the best players in the region.

“The championship has set a high standard for future events, highlighting the importance of fostering young talent and providing them with platforms to shine,” said Kekana.

“With continued support from the chess federation and the community, young prodigies like Bokang are sure to make their mark on the world of chess.”

Bokang’s triumph at the Polokwane Chess Championship 2024 serves as an inspiration to aspiring young chess players and underscores the importance of supporting and nurturing emerging talent.
