Eagle’s Nest debate team brag with mayor’s cup

The Eagle's Nest senior debate team has been securing the Polokwane Executive mayor's cup for eight consecutive years.

POLOKWANE – The Eagle’s Nest senior debate team emerged victorious in a heated showdown against their counterparts from Stanford Lake College, securing the prestigious Polokwane Executive Mayor’s cup last Wednesday.

Among more than 25 participating schools in the annual mayor’s cup, several competitors were eliminated in the preliminary rounds. Despite formidable competition from schools including Capricorn High School, Veritas School and PEPPS, the debaters Eagles persevered, ultimately defeating Stanford Lake College in the final.

Gr 12 learner Ruth Phiri’s eloquence earned her the title of best speaker in both the semi-finals and the finals.

“Since our debut in the mayor’s cup in 2010, our senior team has consistently excelled, securing the trophy in eight consecutive years from 2011 to 2016, and now in 2022 and 2023. We firstly thank God, the debate coach, teachers and the debaters for their outstanding dedication and effort,” principal Mac van den Berg remarked.
