Athletics season in full swing at cluster event

Athletes from various secondary schools in the Polokwane Cluster competed for a spot at the Capricorn District Athletics meeting on February 8.

POLOKWANE – Athletes from various secondary schools in the Polokwane Cluster competed on the track and field at the Polokwane Cluster athletics meeting that was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on February 8.

The pacers were competing for a spot in the Capricorn District Athletics meeting, scheduled at the Peter Mokaba Stadium this Thursday and Friday.

Leon Moakamedi, the chairperson of the Polokwane cluster athletics committee said they were happy with the progress made by the athletes.

“We had schools from Maraba, Moletjie, Seshego and the Polokwane area which were represented by their top athletes at the event. All the athletes did well in the respective disciplines. For the primary schools we chose 140, and for the high schools we chose 120 athletes. We wish all the athletes who qualified well for the Capricorn event.”

Andronicca Somo, the deputy chairperson of the Polokwane cluster athletics committee said all systems are ready for the Capricorn District Athletics meeting.

“We are asking the Polokwane Municipality to make sure that there is enough athletics equipment for the athletes and also that the stadium is clean. We struggled with equipment in the past years, and had to borrow from some schools. We paid and booked the stadium in advance so we expect good service from the municipality.”

Somo said she was pleased with the efforts made by teachers from various schools in ensuring that there is adequate nutrition for the learners.

“In the past, we had learners collapsing on the track because they left their homes on empty stomachs. This year, with the assistance of the teachers, we make sure that all athletes eat proper meals before they compete to avoid any eventualities.”
