Pink ball action at Stanford Lake College

Stanford Lake College recently hosted the Trophy Toyota Stanford T20 Bash with participating schools including Ben Voster High and PHS.

POLOKWANE – Stanford Lake College recently hosted the Trophy Toyota Stanford T20 Bash with schools including Ben Vorster High School, Hoërskool Pietersburg and Merensky High School joining SLC for some pink-ball action.

During SLC’s game against Ben Vorster, Ben Vorster won the toss and opted to bat first.

Not long after the start of the match, SCL took three wickets, but Thiandré Ryneke and Ndjabulo Maseko made up for it with their 50-run partnership. Ben Vorster managed to score 147/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

The top bowlers were Connor Veldsman, Tristan Brett and Joshua Doolabh, each taking two wickets.

SLC lost three quick wickets leaving them with 39/4 before Veldman and Ryno Schultz put up a 64-run for the fifth wicket.

Veldsman lost his wicket soon after reaching 50 runs. SCL lost the game by 14 runs. Musa Nkuna took two wickets for the Ben Vorster team. Veldsman was selected as the player of the match.

PHS took on Merensky on the Hillary Fields.

PHS won the toss and opted to bat first. Opening batsmen Nicolas Oerlemans (62 runs off 41 balls) and Stefan Swanepoel (81 runs off 45 balls) made sure there was a big target for Merensky to chase.

PHS finished the innings on 183/4 in their allotted 20 overs, with Xander Schoeman and Topher Elpinstein taking two wickets each for Merensky. Merensky was bowled out for 98 runs, with Luka Heinlein scoring 27 runs. Oerlemans took three wickets and Ignus Ferreira two. Oerlemans was selected as the player of the match.

Saturday morning saw SLC and Merensky on the field.

Merensky won the toss and opted to bat first. Merensky’s first wicket was lost from a good catch from Zayd Moosa. The top run scorers for Merensky were Logan Jansen van Rensburg scoring 40 off 47 balls and JP Botha scoring 30 runs off 11 balls. Between Connor Veldsman and Joshua Doolabh, SLC only conceded 17 runs for four wickets in the last four overs of the innings.

Merensky scored 153 for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs with Veldsman taking three wickets for 16 runs and Doolabh two wickets.

SLC was bowled out for 99 within 19 overs. Timothy Baker, Topher Elphinstein, and Xander Schoeman each took two wickets for Merensky. Stanford lost the game by 54 runs. Botha was selected as the player of the match.

PHS and Ben Vorster took to the field on the Hillary Field, where Ben Vorster won the toss and elected to bat first. Anton Lourens scored 12 runs off 13 balls and Aamaris Nortje 30 runs off 35 balls, to lift the Ben Vorster spirit after a score of 33/5.

Cilliers van der Merwe took three wickets for 20 runs in his three overs.

PHS won the game with three wickets, with Nicolas Oerlemans scoring 69 runs off 42 balls and Musa Nkuna from Ben Vorster taking 4/14 runs in his four overs. Oerlemans was selected as the player of the match.

Saturday afternoon saw SLC and PHS face off in the last of the pool matches.

SLC chose to bat first and after a while found themselves at 68/9. Matthew Scriven made 16 runs off 15 balls, and Nakedi Makwaya, made 13 runs off 17 balls, taking the team to 99 runs.

The PHS team looked set to win the game by a big margin after being 71/0 after 10 overs, and eventually won the match by five wickets. Juan Randall and AJ Gallaway were the top batsmen for PHS as they scored 33 runs and 42 runs respectively. The player of the match was Hanno van Zyl, taking one wicket for 11 runs in his four overs, a catch, and scoring 18 runs off six balls.

The final took place on Sunday with Merensky and Ben Vorster. Merensky won the toss and opted to bat first.

They managed to score 124 runs all out, with Xander Schoeman scoring 44 runs. Wessel Joubert from Ben Vorster took three wickets. Ruben Pohl made 51 runs off 43 balls, and Anton Lourens, 24 runs not out. This 60-run partnership kept them in the game. In the last over, Ben Vorster needed 20 runs off the final six balls. Wilhelm Brummer hit a six in the over, but Merensky won the game by seven runs. Schoeman took three wickets for 16 runs in his four overs.

Due to bad weather, the games on Sunday got cancelled.

PHS was crowned as victors for the second year running. Nicolas Oerlemans from PHS received the player of the tournament award, and Cilliers van der Merwe, also from PHS, took the catch of the tournament award.
