Bet-Shalom teachers create mural art to stimulate creativity
Teacher Deoné Roos says the painting serves as a meaningful reminder that we are all equal regardless of our backgrounds.
POLOKWANE- To make the school more colourful, school-friendly and to stimulate creativity, Bet-Shalom Christian School teacher Deoné Roos recently designed an art mural with the help of another teacher, Diana Gerber.
“I was inspired by my mother who’s also an artist. She influenced me to explore painting and drawing. I didn’t start creating art until I was 13, when I began experimenting with different mediums. We were at school one day and we just decided that I’m going to design some artwork that’s going to look beautiful and colourful,” Roos said.
The painting depicts churches, buildings, hot air balloons and religious words of encouragement.
“At our school, we observe an annual Anti-Bullying Day and this mural also serves as a meaningful reminder that we are all equal regardless of our backgrounds. Bet-Shalom Christian School remains a place of peace and this painting resembles that,” Gerber said.
Roos added that since they could not let teaching time slip, the mural had to be painted bit by bit.
“We painted when we could, during our free periods, during break or after school. It took us around a month to complete and it was all worth the wait. It is of course a bonus that painting is our passion and it is therapeutic too,” they concluded.
