Let your child’s apps work for them these holidays – Taxila teacher

Taxila Secondary School teacher Reginah Magolo says parents should get involved by ensuring their children download educational apps instead of games these holidays.

POLOKWANE- Learners today are technologically inclined as most of them know and understand gadgets, and the apps they download are able to assist them educationally.

These are the words of Taxila Secondary School teacher, Reginah Magolo who says in the school holiday, parents should get involved by ensuring their children download educational apps besides playing games in their free time. “We know most children don’t open their school books during the holiday, so this could work in their favour as they will be using their devices,” she said.

She told Review that parents should have time every day where they sit down with their kids and use it as an opportunity to bond with them, playing these games together.

Magolo said it does not have the same impact if parents simply hand a phone or tablet to their children and tell them to play the games on their own.

“Another way to get engaged is to play board games such as 30 Seconds, which improves their way of thinking and general knowledge; Scrabble, which improves their spelling, as well as Sodoku and Monopoly which improve mathematics and business skills,” she said.

She says she often uses apps to assist in teaching learners media skills such as public relations, TV presenting, modelling and philanthropy, and she offers extra lessons at school too.
