LIMPOPO – Mbilwi Secondary School recently let some of their learners be the judge of what they think of the law industry.

Learners who want to pursue a career in law, or just want to know more about the ins and outs of how courts and judges operate on a daily basis, had the opportunity to partake in the National Schools Moot Court Competition which enlightened learners about the South African Constitutional Court.

Learners Andisa Mulovhedzi (16) and Busisiwe Booi (17) returned from the competition as the runner-up team and are proud of the progress they made at the event.

Andisa explained the competition initially started in October last year with 12 schools in the same district and Mbilwi’s learners ended among the four best schools to represent Limpopo during the recent nationals.

Andisa wants to study law at one of South Africa’s universities once she matriculates, and said the competition provided a wonderful opportunity for her and her classmate’s future prospects.

“We came together with learners from various provinces and we were allowed to converge at the Constitutional Court to get a first-hand experience of how things work. The oral argument presentation provided us with a real-life scenario where we are able to express ourselves in front of judges, which exposed us to the real court setting,” Andisa added.

According to her, meeting judges creates an opportunity to practise professional interaction, learn good practices and she establish new relationships with the learners teachers and the judges, all from various part of the country.

She told CV her team received medals, certificates, personal trophies and school trophy for their second place in the competition.

One of the facilitators of the competition and teacher at Mbilwi Secondary School, Thandi Maba, said the competition equips learners with an in-depth knowledge of the Constitution of the country, human rights, good communication skills and how courts operate on a daily basis.
