LIMPOPO – In a move to boost economic transformation and infrastructure development, the Limpopo Contractor Development Programme was officially launched last Thursday.
The initiative aims to empower emerging contractors, especially those from historically disadvantaged communities, with the skills and support necessary to thrive in the construction industry.
The programme is co-sponsored by the national government under the Vuku’phile initiative, and is part of a broader effort to build a sustainable pipeline of qualified and experienced contractors within the province.
The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene, delivered the keynote address. “This programme is not just a training initiative, but a long-term investment in the people of Limpopo. It is about building capacity and creating real opportunities for growth in the construction sector.”
A total of 36 learner contractors will participate in the programme, with 67% being youths, and 53% women.
Participants will undergo structured training, mentorship, and gain practical experience to elevate their businesses and increase competitiveness in the sector. The programme forms part of the province’s broader infrastructure and economic growth strategy, which prioritises skills development, youth employment, support for SMMEs, and inclusive economic participation.
Rachoene further emphasised the transformative potential of the programme.“By equipping emerging contractors with hands-on experience and industry knowledge, we are laying the foundation for a new generation of builders who will drive infrastructure development and economic progress in Limpopo.”
The implementation and impact of the programme will be monitored to ensure measurable outcomes in terms of job creation, business growth and the development of a robust contractor base in the province.
