LIMPOPO – The Limpopo police have opened an inquest docket following a domestic violence-related incident that led to the death of an elderly man.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect (75) was searching for a male victim from whom he had allegedly bought bricks.
“The suspect was driving late on Friday night (March 14) when he came across the victim in his own vehicle. Without saying anything, the suspect shot the victim’s upper body before the victim drove to the nearest hospital,” Ledwaba’s statement read.
The suspect then returned home where he set his house alight after dousing it in a flammable liquid.
“He proceeded to another room where his wife was sleeping, woke her up and threatened to kill her before instructing her to get inside the burning house with him,” Ledwaba said.
He added that the suspect’s wife managed to escape but that he shot at her several times with no luck.
“The suspect later shot himself and died on the scene. We urge anyone experiencing any gender-based violence related or domestic violence related matters to seek assistance from professionals,” he said, adding that police investigations continue.
