Polokwane nurse seeks support to continue community work

Annah Mametsa has spent 31 years improving lives through selfless community initiatives, donating essentials and supporting education and wellness.

POLOKWANE – Annah Mametsa (56), a dedicated nurse with 31 years of experience, has spent her life improving the well-being of others, both within and beyond her professional role.

With certificates in HIV/Aids counselling and testing and the Nurse Initiative Management of Anti-Retroviral Treatment (NIMART), Mametsa’s passion for helping people is evident through her many community initiatives.

Her charitable journey began by running a youth and soccer club in Ext 44.

Today, she donates school uniforms, sanitary pads, and stationery to underprivileged individuals, often out of her own pocket. In addition, she has adopted two schools where she rewards top-performing learners, encouraging them to excel.

“My passion started when I saw a child wearing torn shoes. I couldn’t help but cry, and the image of that child stayed with me. I knew I wouldn’t find peace unless I acted. I bought the child new school uniforms, and only then did the images stop,” she said. “Whenever I see children in need, the visuals return until I help them.”

Mametsa also raises money by organising events such as Miss Charity, a platform to support her initiatives. Her tireless efforts have earned her numerous accolades, including:
– Community Builder Award (2006).
– Finalist, Marilyn Lahana Award (2022).
– South African Heroines Award: Health Category (2023).
– She-Millionaire: Health (2023).
– Community Builder, Devoted Magazine (2024).
– Fabulous Woman Award: Health (2024).
– Sunday World Newspaper Unsung Heroine (2024).

Mametsa is currently a finalist for the Humanitarian Impact Award at the List Awards 2024, set to take place in Zimbabwe on November 8. She is also nominated for the She-Millionaire Award and SMME Award.

Despite her achievements, Mametsa funds her initiatives entirely from personal savings, making it difficult to sustain her projects. She is now seeking sponsorships and donations, both to continue her community work and to attend the List Awards in Zimbabwe.

“I need any form of assistance to keep making a positive impact and to attend the awards. Together, we can make the world a better place,” she said.
