POLOKWANE – Laerskool Ivypark intensified its anti-bullying campaign on October 2, aiming to raise awareness about the serious effects of bullying.
Principal Willem Opperman said the school had a special visit from Benny the Anti-Bullying Bunny, who spoke to learners about bullying and its consequences.
“We are committed to making Laerskool Ivypark a no-bullying zone,” Opperman said. “We want our learners to speak up, seek help when needed, and be kind to one another. The campaign was free of charge, with the main goal of teaching children the value of respect.”
Opperman highlighted that bullying presents a significant threat to school safety, undermining efforts to create a nurturing environment that fosters personal growth.
“Bullying remains one of the most persistent challenges in schools today. Many adults may be unaware of its extent, but research shows that most South African children, whether as bullies, victims, or witnesses, are impacted.”
He said the consequences of bullying can lead to physical and psychological trauma, school dropouts, self-harm, and even suicide or violence.
“Bullying negatively impacts both the victim and the school environment, creating a toxic atmosphere that disrupts learning.”
Opperman concluded by affirming that bullying should never be accepted.
“It is not just a part of growing up; it violates a child’s right to respect, safety, and education in a secure environment. Addressing bullying is essential to ensure the well-being of all learners.”
