POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Classic Car Club (LCCC) hosted a successful Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive (DGD) in and around the city on Sunday, raising money and promoting awareness for men’s health.
A group of 29 cars departed from the Pietersburg Club, stopping over at Hennie’s Restaurant at the Thornhill Shopping Centre and finally retreating to Pietersburg Club for a five-star buffet and lots of banter and networking.
The cars were all pre-1984 and the most senior participants were the 1933 Austin Seven owned by Dr Bruce Phillips, which also emerged as the winner for the day and the 1938 Studebaker LDV owned by André van Dyk in second place.
A 1960 DKW Auto Union 1000SP, another 1960 DKW 1000S and four Volkswagen Beetles and Anton van Zyl’s 1960 Messerschmidt KR200 turned the heads of passers-by and visitors to the venues.
On the eastern bypass, some of the vehicles overheated but were soon revived and able to take their places in the convoy, with minor exceptions.
The extraordinary high temperature also played a role.
“It was an honour and a pleasure to host the Polokwane DGD 2024 and we are thankful for all the donations and dapper dressed participants that made the day possible. What better way to promote the awareness of men’s health than through vintage and classic cars,” said host Gustaf Tiersma, adding that R6 762 was raised on the day.
He confirmed that an even bigger event is planned for next year during September.
Co-host and secretary of the club, Yolanda Tiersma reckoned that as a woman, it is just as important to support men’s health as women’s health.
“There are countless fundraising initiatives for women, that is why I support and co-host this important event for men’s health. We hope to see more participants as your host and co-host in 2025,” Tiersma said.
