Phuti is on a mission to change the standard of volleyball
Phuti Mathekga (33) says he joined Capva because he had a vision of changing the standard of volleyball in the Capricorn District.
POLOKWANE – Through playing Volleyball and understanding the socio-economic factors that impact the game has pushed Phuti Mathekga (33) to work harder to improve the game in the Capricorn District.
Mathekga, who hails from Emdo Park, started playing the game in 2005 before joining the Capricorn District Volleyball Association (Capva) in 2022 where he was later elected as the chairperson.
“I used to play as a setter and I was the core of our team. My teammates were always curious about my skills because they proved to be helpful. I still use those skills and the mindset today to make sure that the district volleyball goes far,” said Mathekga.
He added that coming from a disadvantaged background meant facilities were not up to standard and that motivated him to go further in the industry and help improve it.
Mathekga says he joined Capva because he had a vision of changing the standard of volleyball in the district.
“My top priority is to develop volleyball’s system and to make sure that talent is recognised and opportunities are created in order for players to build strong careers,” he told the Polokwane Review-Observer.
Like any top role, Mathekga says challenges faced as the chairperson include a lack of funds and sponsors.
“Having to play on uneven courts leads to injuries but I have the ambition to find resources to develop the game in our community. I always motivate teams and players to do better and be mentally and physically ready. “
Memorable moments for Mathekga include representing the province in 2007 in the Free State as well as in Gauteng in 2010.
“Always work hard and smart to get what you are looking for. Nothing comes easy but hard work pays off,” he concluded.
