Former FM presenter takes helm as Makhado Muni’s voice

Mpho Rathando, former Phalaphala FM radio presenter, has been appointed as Makhado Municipality spokesperson.

LIMPOPO – Former Phalaphala FM radio presenter, Mpho Rathando, was appointed as the Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson at the beginning of the month.

Rathando joined the municipality last year as a council manager, succeeding Louis Bobodi, who was promoted to communication manager.

Rathando’s educational journey started at Matondoni and Mathoma primary schools before he matriculated from Luphai High School.

He furthered his studies at several institutions, including Wits University, Stellenbosch University, and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where he earned a master’s degree in journalism.

His started as a student journalist and radio presenter at Wits University’s Voice of Wits campus radio station and later hosted a talk show for the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), where he interviewed high-profile figures, including cabinet ministers from former President Jacob Zuma’s administration. He also presented various shows on Musina FM.

In 2010, Rathando took a break from mainstream media and became a Hansard reporter at the national parliament in Cape Town, focusing on content development for three-and-a-half years. He then served as a communication officer for Musina Local Municipality and later joined the Department of Correctional Services as a communication manager for six months.

Reflecting on his journey, he said: “I have experienced both worlds – as a journalist, probing everything newsworthy – and as an administrator and communicator across different spheres of government.” He attributes his promotion to middle management in the municipality to hard work and dedication.

Rathando remarked that media liaison is a demanding 24-hour role requiring a commitment to truth, respect for journalists’ deadlines, and a passion for professionalism.

He also encouraged young people to remain disciplined and believe in their dreams.

“Perseverance, patience, and passion will unlock all doors meant for you,” he said.
