Illegal hawkers removed from entrance to Mokopane

The issue of illegal hawkers has been a growing concern, with residents increasingly frustrated by the disruption and health risks posed by the unregulated market.

MOKOPANE – After more than two years of efforts to address illegal hawking, DA councillor Yolande Coetzee announced that the hawkers at the southern entrance of town have been successfully removed.

The operation was carried out by Team Thanyela, a collaboration between Mogalakwena Municipality, the traffic department, the police, SARS, and the Department of Home Affairs. The primary goal of the operation was to curb illegal trading and improve the area for local residents.

The issue of illegal hawkers has been a growing concern, with residents increasingly frustrated by the disruption and health risks posed by the unregulated market.

Former Mayor Frans Mokwele pledged in April 2021 to address the situation and implement long-term solutions, recognising the health risks, environmental damage, and potential for crime in the area.

Coetzee, who has been actively involved in the efforts to clean up the area, noted that the site had become a hotspot for drug sales and illegal activities.

“Lawlessness reigned, and the area was a dumping ground,” she stated. Over the past two years, constant negotiations between the Mogalakwena Municipality and Sanral had been underway to resolve the issue, though progress was previously stalled by political interference.

Thanks to renewed efforts, the process of installing barriers has now begun, which will prevent vehicles, trucks, and taxis from stopping to shop or sleep in the area.

Coetzee expressed her gratitude to sponsors who contributed to the operation’s success, stating that without their support, the clean-up would have been much more difficult.

The operation marks a significant step toward restoring order and cleanliness at the southern entrance of the town.
