A sweet taste of entrepreneurship for young Polokwane baker

22-year-old self-taught baker Mahlatse Mongatane rises to success with Hlatsis Bakes, earning a bronze medal at a national competition.

POLOKWANE – At just 22 years old, Mahlatse Junior Mongatane is already making a name for himself in the baking world. A self-taught baker and student at Capricorn TVET College, where he is studying hospitality level three, Mahlatse is the proud owner of Hlatsis Bakes.

His journey into baking started three years ago, inspired by a visit to a cake shop in Pretoria. Driven by curiosity and passion, Mahlatse taught himself the art of baking, officially launching his business in November of the previous year.

His dedication paid off when he earned a bronze medal at the World Skills South Africa National Competition, Conference, and Career Festival 2024 earlier this year.

Despite facing challenges such as dealing with rude customers, handling requests for free samples, and working with a small baking stove, Mahlatse remains undeterred.

He actively participates in entrepreneurship competitions and growth programmes to further develop his business.

The highlight of his baking career? Receiving positive feedback from satisfied clients.
