Boyne teacher awarded for excellence

Refiloe Shai (26), a Sepedi teacher for Gr 11 and 12, has won a national teaching award for excellence in secondary school teaching.

POLOKWANE – In a momentous achievement, teacher Refiloe Shai from Viking village in Boyne, has been honoured with the Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award at the 24th National Teachers Awards, held at The Ranch Hotel last Friday.

At just 26 years old, Shai has already made remarkable strides in education. Initially graduating with a BA degree, her passion for teaching drove her to pursue a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, where she earned a distinction in one of her modules. She currently teaches Sepedi to Gr 11 and 12 learners at Mmakgabo Secondary School in Mahwibitswane, outside Seshego.

She has an impressive track record of a 100% pass rate, with many learners obtaining distinctions in her subject. She said her success is bolstered by her background in mentorship at the University of Limpopo, which has helped shape her into the teacher she is today.

In addition to her classroom achievements, Shai coordinates the Mmakgabo Book Club, a role she holds with pride. She was the 2018 Funda Mzantsi Champion in Sepedi book reviews and recently won the national coordinator title at the 2023 Funda Mzantsi championship.

Reflecting on her award, Shai said: “This recognition is an honour in the field of education. I was nominated by a colleague, and I am grateful for the award.”

Shai shared her excitement when officials from the Limpopo Department of Education visited her school to verify her work, as part of the competition process. “It was a great opportunity to showcase my achievements, including the book club I established at my school.”

This provincial accolade means that Shai will now represent Limpopo at the national adjudication of the National Teachers Awards. Since starting her teaching career in 2021, she says she has a passion for education. “Teaching is in my blood, I’ve loved it since I was a child. I am proud to play a role in shaping responsible citizens, and my book club has provided learners with opportunities to compete nationally and win prizes.”

Looking ahead, she believes her award will benefit her school and district by attracting new partnerships and funding. “This recognition will open doors for our school and draw high-quality educators who are determined and hardworking. I owe a lot of my success to the support of my school principal, Albert Makwela.”

Shai concluded by expressing her hope that her award will inspire other teachers. “Despite the limited resources we work with, excellence is rewarded. I hope this serves as motivation for other teachers to enhance their practices. The Department of Basic Education should continue these competitions as they inspire and reward teachers for their exceptional work.”
