Mankweng and Seshego top crime stats again

Experts note that socio-economic pressures, including joblessness and the rising cost of living, may be fueling emotional distress, contributing to crimes in these areas.

POLOKWANE – Some types of crime have worsened in Polokwane’s major townships between April and June 2024, causing concern among citizens and the government. This trend is reflected in the 2024/25 first-quarter crime statistics, which highlight Mankweng and Seshego as areas of particular concern.

Both Mankweng and Seshego police stations have consistently reported high numbers of sexual assault and rape cases, competing with Thohoyandou among the top five worst stations nationally. However, new patterns of crime are emerging, with a rise in aggravated crimes such as assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH), residential burglaries, and a range of thefts.

Mankweng, home to the University of Limpopo, now ranks first provincially and nationally for residential burglaries. Despite a slight drop in cases, from 245 last year to 215 this year, the township also experienced a sharp increase in theft cases, jumping from 122 to 254.

Seshego, a township known for contributing economic opportunities to Polokwane, saw an alarming rise in assault with the intention of grievous bodily harm cases, ranking first in Limpopo. Assault cases in the township increased dramatically from 85 in 2020 to 168 in 2024. Mankweng also saw a significant rise in these cases, jumping from 66 in 2020 to 140 this year.

Mental health advocates have warned of the psychological toll on victims, with conditions like depression, PTSD, anxiety, and substance abuse becoming more prevalent.

Experts note that socio-economic pressures, including joblessness and the rising cost of living, may be fueling emotional distress, contributing to these crimes. Authorities and communities alike are urged to address the worsening crime and its impact on the well-being of residents.
