Murder at tavern shocks Midoroni village

Mishumo Mabitsela (24) was stabbed during an altercation, the community blames late-night liquor abuse for contributing to such violence.

LIMPOPO – The tranquil village of Midoroni in the Kutama area is reeling from the shocking and tragic murder of a local resident, Mishumo Mabitsela (24).

The incident, which occurred early Sunday morning, has left the community in grief.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi, the murder took place on Sunday at around 02:20.

“We received a report of a murder at Tshikwarani Clinic and found a male victim with a stab wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.”

Community leader Kedibone Foromo expressed the shock and sadness felt by local residents.

“Details are still unclear as the incident happened at night. What we have learnt is that the deceased was at a local beer garden with friends when they encountered a group of men on the tavern premises. There was an altercation, and Mr Mabitsela was reportedly stabbed without his friends noticing. When he tried to run back to them, they fled without realising he had been injured,” Foromo said.

He further explained that after realising their friend had been stabbed, the group sought help from other patrons at the tavern, but were initially turned away.

“One resident eventually went home to get a vehicle and transported him to the clinic, where he was pronounced dead,” he added.

The community blames late-night liquor abuse for contributing to such violence.

“We are losing young lives to alcohol abuse, and it’s devastating. We hope the police will swiftly arrest those responsible. Given the timing, we believe the suspects are likely local residents, which may aid in the investigation,” Foromo said.

Ralvey Lifuwa, the deceased’s aunt, remembered him as a diligent and kind individual.

“He was a good person who always took care of his home. No one deserves to die like this. We are deeply saddened by his loss,” she shared.

Mabitsela’s funeral will be held on Saturday in Midoroni, with a service starting at 06:00 at his home.
