Hours before power is restored in Westenburg and Nirvana

A cable fault as well as vandalism to the Superbia substation has left residents in Westenburg and Niravna in the dark.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality says they are unable to provide a precise time estimate for the restoration of power in Westenburg and Nirvana.

A power outage has affected both areas and parts of the CBD from the early hours of this morning.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala says the disruption is as a result of a fault in a cable supplying electricity to those areas.

“Municipal technical teams are engaged in locating the fault, and working to restore power as swiftly as possible. Unfortunately, municipal efforts have been further hindered by vandalism at the Superbia substation, which is responsible for supplying electricity to the affected areas,” his statement reads.

Selala adds that the deliberate damage to the breakers at this facility has compromised the municipality’s ability to transfer the load to a functional breaker, as any attempt to do so results in a complete disruption of power to additional areas.

“At this stage, the municipality is unable to provide a precise time estimate for the restoration of power. However, the municipality will provide regular updates to keep residents informed of any progress,” he says.

Residents who witness suspicious activities on service infrastructure are encouraged to contact the police or the municipality.
