Thohoyandou drummer on the beat of success

King Rue (23) is making a name for herself in the music industry while empowering women and advocating for gender equality.

LIMPOPO – Murunwa Rambau, known as King Rue, is a rising star in the entertainment industry as a versatile drummer specialising in amapiano and 3-step afro-tech music.

The 23-year-old from Thohoyandou started drumming at 15 and officially entered the music scene in 2022, quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with.

Working with various DJs in duo groups helped Rue develop her stage presence and branding, leading her to embrace independence in her music career.

In 2023, she became the face of the popular Vhembe clothing brand, ‘Made in Venda94’ and secured an ambassadorship with the international skincare brand Isabella Garcia.

A firm believer in women’s empowerment, Rue uses her platform to inspire and uplift women through her performances, collaborations with fellow female creatives, and advocacy for gender equality.

Alongside her music career, she holds degrees in public administration and development from the University of Venda and occupational health and safety.

Rue, a devoted mother, balances her family life with her passion for music, and says self-care, empowerment, and equality for all women are important issues.

“As a mother, I balance my music career with raising a family, which has fuelled my commitment to advocating for women’s rights,” she said.

Motivated by artists Black Motion and Uncle Waffles, Rue’s journey as a drummer has been transformative.

Despite facing challenges, including the breakdown of three duo partnerships, she believes in her own strength and has embraced a solo career.

“Being a young, black female drummer from Vhembe, I aim to inspire, motivate, and encourage. Becoming a solo artist has been an incredible journey,” she concluded.
